Wenger for where, can't you see Eduardo is back and RVP is coming to replace Adebayor, he won't miss anyone. Djourou and Senderous and even Hoyte are there to cover for Toure.

Man U get sense pass, no single effect on them. If you subtract Essien and Drogba from Chelsea, you know the result.

What about Everton and Portsmouth?
Title: Re: Ghana 2008
Post by: Penthome on January 02, 2008, 09:31:07 AM
Mustay, Emmanuel Adebayor and Benni McCarthy are missing from your list.

Also, Chelsea is playing with Team C, can you imagine. See line up, all the backline 4 are injured.

Out: Terry, Carvalho, Ferreira, Ashley Cole
Mid: Lampard, Makelele
Attack: Drogba, Shevchenko

Feel so sorry for Chelsea.

That's true. But then, I can bet Adebayo won't enter top 5.

Sincerely, I don't see CIV as a threat; it's just an over-hyped encounter.

RAther I see MALi and Enin as dicey :-X

Mali has always contested for the GOLDEN BRONZE medal with Nigeria for the past 3 tournaments and BEnin is the Niagara side; almost all of 'em in the team are NIGERIANS :o

What they don't have going for them however is EXPERIENCE but like a footballer once said, it's EASIER PLAYING HIGHER RANKED TEAM COMPARED TO UNDER-DOGS 'cos they 'll stretch you to the limit!

NIGERIA
Nigeria have made the semifinal line-up at each of the last four MTN Africa Cup of Nations finals but it has been more than decade since the continent’s most populous nation were the winners.
Indeed Nigeria has won the African title just twice, first when they hosted the MTN Africa Cup of Nations finals in 1980 and then again in1994 under the tutelage of the Dutch coach Clemens Westerhof.
A star studded Super Eagles side has been the hallmark of each of their past appearances but they have not been able to convert that quality into gold medals.
With an eye on Africa first-ever World Cup finals in 2010, Nigeria have bought in the German coach Berti Vogts to take charge of their current team, which includes some of the most exciting players on the continent.
The likes of Obafemi Martins and Nwankwo Kanu lead the attack with John Obi Mikel in the midfield and Taye Taiwo and Joseph Yobo in defence.

They have replaced a generation that include the quality of Austin Okocha and Sunday Oliseh as well as the goal scoring acumen of Rashidi Yekini, the second highest goal scorer in Nations Cup history.
Nigeria qualified easily for the finals with five wins from six matches in the preliminaries, their only blemish being a controversial 2-1 defeat in Uganda

IVORY COAST

Cote d’Ivoire has quickly become the pin up boys of African football with their galaxy of star players and will be among the strong favourites to win the 2008 edition of the MTN Africa Cup of Nations.
The Ivorians, who were runners-up in a post-match penalty shootout to hosts in Egypt in the 2006 Nations Cup final, have only once before won the top continental title, when Senegal hosted the event in 1992.
A new generation, led by the goal scoring of African Footballer of the Year Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou, Abdelkader Keita and the Arsenal defender Kolo Toure has taken the Ivorians to new heights, including a maiden World Cup finals appearance in Germany 18 months ago.
Drogba was the first Ivorian to win the Footballer of the Year award, but compatriots like Youssef Fofana and Laurent Pokou came close in previous years. Pokou still holds the MTN Africa Cup of Nations goal scoring record.
The Elephants qualified for the 2008 MTN Africa Cup of Nations without conceding a single goal in their four Group One matches.

MALI
Mali return to the MTN Africa Cup of Nations finals after missing out on the last edition in Egypt, bringing with them a star studded squad which will be many pundits’ outside favourites to cause havoc to the established order at the tournament.
Mali have already proven their pedigree by making the semifinals of the 2004 and 2002 editions, and are still using several of the experienced players of that squad.
They were also surprise semifinalists in 1994 and runners-up to Congo in the final of the 1972 finals, which was played in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
Mali came through a tough qualifying group, winning a bruising battle away at the World Cup finalists Togo in Lome in October to qualify for the 2008 MTN Africa Cup of Nations.
They finished unbeaten at the top of Group Nine, driven by the form of the likes of Frederic Kanoute and captain Mahamoudu Diarra, who was suspended after the last tournament they played in Tunisia.
Both Kanoute and Diarra play in Spain and Mali can also call on players from clubs in England, France, Greece and the Middle East.
Mali’s French coach Jean-Francois Jodar posted a record of three wins and three draws in the qualifying campaign in stark contract to their flop in the last qualifying campaign.
Mali’s fortunes are also closely guided these days by the football federation president Salif Keita, who was the first ever winner of the African Footballer of the Year award in 1970.

BENIN

Benin will be playing in only their second MTN Africa Cup of Nations final tournament after qualifying as one of the three best runners-up.
They came from an outside position in their qualifying group to finish second behind Mali, ending with 11 points and join South Africa and Tunisia in the ‘lucky losers’ berths.
Benin’s only previous appearance was in the 2004 tournament in Tunisia, where they lost all three matches and conceded eight goals in the process.
There are many survivors from that team in the squad that competed in the 2008 MTN Africa Cup of Nations finals tournament, which will make ‘Les Ecureuils’ a much more dangerous prospect.
The team will also enjoy considerable support giving the relatively short distance from Benin to host nation Ghana.
Benin’s small size and population has made it difficult for them to be a regular contender in African competition but they have made better use of their growing contingent of foreign-based players.
Benin also hosted the 2005 African Youth Championship and their under-20 side qualified for that tournament in third place for the World Youth Championships in the Netherlands the same year.
At the 2004 finals, they had Ghana’s Cecil Jones Attuquayefio in charge.

Why didn't anyone add Zidan to the list of the highest goal scorer to be expected.

Eto scored his 12th and 13th goals today, that makes him one goal close to leveling the record of the highest goal scorer of AFCON and two goals from beating it. One Cocu guy presently holds it.

Egypt is damn good. These guys were playing with so much understanding. I can beat my chest and say there was over 20 perfect one-two passes in that game and at different parts of the pitch and by different players. I think that's more of the tactics of the coach and the fast grasping of the players. They really played like defending champions.

It's obvious that the referee tried his best to side Cameroun as CAF referees always do, but whoever is good is always good.

That's what KD does not understand when he claims it's the refrees that are helping MAN U win games. What a thing to say?

Who send them. Egypt is just the bomb. The only match I did not watch is that of Morocco and ???.
Of all I've watched, Egypt's got the best performance: perfect passes and shots.

After first half, it's 5 shots, 3 goals.

Zambia's first goal in the ongoing match between Zambia and Sudan is a cordinated one too. The guy that the last pass in what I won't call a one-two but a one-two-three (  ;D ), did it without even looking.

Cameroon too good for Zambia
Newcastle United midfielder Geremi was on target as Cameroon beat Zambia in the African Cup of Nations.

[float=left](http://www.premierleague.com/javaImages/97/17/0,,12306~3544983,00.jpg)[/float]Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o equalled the African Cup of Nations scoring record with his 14th goal in the competition as Cameroon defeated Zambia 5-1 in the Baba Yara Stadium.

Eto'o matched the record of Ivory Coast's Laurent Pokou as former Middlesbrough forward Joseph Desire Job netted twice.

Cameroon took the lead after 28 minutes when Newcastle United's Geremi curled a free-kick

over the wall.

Cameroon added the second when two Zambia defenders failed to clear a long ball up field and Job was presented with an easy chance. Achille Emana scored the third after 44 minutes and then Eto'o saw his free-kick strike the hand of Billy Mwanza in the 65th minute and scored from the penalty spot.

hauled down

Job had a simple tap-in for the fifth with 10 minutes left before Chris Katongo volleyed a consolation goal for Zambia in the 89th minute.

Defending champions Egypt, who had beaten Cameroon 4-2 in their opening fixture, defeated Sudan 3-0.

Egypt started slowly but took the lead after 28 minutes as Hosny Rabou scored from the spot after he had been hauled down by Sudan keeper Elmuiz Abdalla.

Egypt made it 2-0 when Abo Terika shot home after 78 minutes and the same player added his second four minutes later when he beat Abdalla with a close-range shot at his near post.

Victory for Egypt left them top of the group and favourites to progress with Zambia left to play.

Up Naija. Muki, close your eyes.

It's Freddiewit reporting live from Ghana for Rub Minds News.
Nice confussion from that accurate shot from Taye Taiwo; same eventually resulted into the woderful goal from the header from Mikel.
Almost immediately, Ivory Coast resorted to show Nigeria that the hope is real with their second goal against Mali.

Naija decided to show levels probably for a beefer like Mukina ;D with a wonderful goal from Ayegbni, who's been off a billion times ??? in the match. Thanks to a wonderful gift of sophisticated pass from Mikel. Who says Yaya Toure is better than him? It's Kd.
Ivory Coast, really stretching that arm of friendship to Nigeria decided to simplify the message that: Mali's due for home.

Was in the bathroom; bathing away the sweats acquired from the physical demonstration of the glee that ensued after Naija came back to show Africa what it took them to be number one (rated) in Fifa Ranking. While in the shower, kd (my brother) opened the door (returning from school) and shouted: "Fredo, you are the only one that believed Nigeria will qualifiy"

I smiled with the joy of having a request granted by my heavenly Papa. Afterall, I'm God's Most Favoured Son.

African Cup of Nations - Vogts slams "racist" media

 Thu, 31 Jan 12:31:00 2008

EXCLUSIVE! Berti Vogts has hit out against his treatment by the Nigerian media, accusing them of racism.
2008 African Cup of Nations Nigeria Berti Vogts - 0

The German came in for fierce criticism as his Nigeria side narrowly avoided a first-round exit from the African Cup of Nations.

Vogts explained his decision not to speak to Nigerian journalists, saying their incessant condemnation was not acceptable.

"If white journalists handled a black manager like this, I think you would call it racism," he told Eurosport-Yahoo!

"I don't need to put up with what has been going on there. I talked to the international press and I am still open for requests of other media representatives."

Former Germany and Scotland boss Vogts was pilloried for selecting seven strikers in his squad - and then seeing his side fail to score in their opening two games.

But a 2-0 win over Benin, coupled with Mali's loss to the Ivory Coast, has seen Nigeria go through to the quarter-finals, where they face hosts Ghana.

Nonetheless, the media have continued to speculate that he will leave his job at the end of the tournament despite being under contract until 2010.

"I don't care about this [speculation]. I know the people writing this," Vogts said.

"They even wrote we were unable to train in our training camp in Malaga because of ice and snow - but in reality it was 20°C.

"Many of these journalists aren't even here. They are watching the matches on TV, writing that we have to become world champions."

It took Nigeria two matches to get their rythm back. Its now a final before the final

Our own Super Eagles will be confronting the Black Stars of Ghana in the first quarter final match.
This is the time for us to show that we are truly the best in Africa, we've got the players to do the job and with God on our side we can win the cup.

UP NAIJA

Its so sad to see Essien out of the tournament...........well he'll be bak to Chelsea to help us hold our midfield.

UP EAGLES!!!

Freddie we qualified at last, thanks to the demolishment of Mali by the Ivory Coast

cant believe i'm only seeing this topic! :o

ok, first thing first... #$%@ berti vogts!! the man is a player reliant coach who lacks the basic discerning skills of a world class coach. i don't know how to explain playing ayegbeni(the buffoon) and martins deep...even a kid knows that their attacking styles are way different, and they can't complement each other. then left-footed osaze is played on the left wing (doesn't he watch this dude play at his club?? how the hell is he supposed to drive in and shoot!)... to add salt to injury, ayegbeni starts displaying his nonchalant attitude and wasting all the chances, and what does vogts do.... remove osaze (the motivator) and bring in mr. no goal in 4 yrs makinwa!!!!... jeez!! the man lacks ideas, ie if he even had any b4.
o boy, that man better not show up in ph, else me and my boys will kidnap his punk ass and demand his salary as ransome! >:(

ok, i've let off the steam... ;D

we should be thanking God and drogba, for our quarter finals ticket. also my boy osaze odemwingie, for not giving up hope 8). lets just hope that with the renewed spirit in the team now, they'll go on to beat ghana on sunday. but with that man vogts still in charge.... i seriously doubt if we can. the fool is out to destroy our football. :'(

let's support the Vogts man. Yes, he has made tactical blunders but many things we do not see unless we are there. We did well against CIV and am only confident that the defence is very tight(except when they lose crazy concentration) and the man should take advise from his crew on how to sharpen his upfront

Save for Obodo, Oruma, Ayila and Odiah who were absent due to obvious reasons, that's the best team Nigeria coulda emerged with.

All the departments were duly represented, unfortunately, we have overrated individuals who cannot play together as a team, who cannot fire from outside the 18 yard, who shoot at goal like they're poor in bed. . .

and above all, a retired coach receiving his pension, courtesy of Glo who felt they could do us a favour by hiring him.

Since 2000, few will argue that Nigeria's nation's cup performance has always been below par, just a strip of luck here and there and some individual plays. You hardly see 6 to 9 tip taps resulting in goals, no way.

Remember the team that went down 1-0 to Germany in Germany, remember the team that went down 1-0 to England @ Wembley? Above all, remember the team that lost to Italy in the USA - that is the team called the SUPER EAGLES.

Someday, the chickens will grow into fowls, then the fowls and with some genetal mutation, into eaglets and eagles, maybe next year, maybe next decade, maybe next life, but until then,

Home sweet home.

Eguaveon rather must have decided to leave the fool called Vogts to finish his rubbish so that he could be sacked in time.
He's not worthy to be called a coach.

The team paraded by Berti Vogts was or is a good team but lacked technicality. The coaching was too bad. Now just look at it when Ghana went down by one man......we had Martins and Utaka on the bench who would have come in to raise the spirit of the game with their strength and agility but we didnt see that substitution coming in...........the formation wa sbad and the boys lost concentration just at the final minutes and they let in that Goal that Ghana has been searching for 16 years.

The truth is that we didnt deserve to win cause we fumbled from the first game..........The coach brought in a tactics that has long been forgotten..........eight strikers and none had the ability or sense to take an outside shot. There was no individual skill, it was all rubbish.

I hope the NFA will learn from and act fast.

We need a Mourinho or a Westerhof to handle this guys, they are jsut too good to be handled by an inexperienced coach.

Berti Vogts: Nigerians are arrogant

This is an headline i saw in one the nation's sports dailies but i haven't had the time to go throught it. But if this is what i'm insinuating then i must say Berti has bitten more than he can chew. You'll recall with me that i posted a topic on this wonderful forum of ours about this man taking us to the height of our goal in the round leather game. Imagine him saying Nigerians are arrogant after taking us out to our worst outing in 25yrs since the existence of the Nation's cup. Its so bad that he can still say a thing like this......i don't blame him since he has power over the NFA already. Imagine him coaching the National team from his home country, why wont he have the guts to say a thing like this? Well if you ask me i will say he heads the NFA so.. :-[

This same man was bulged out of scotland i mean bulged out. Na only naija sabi take nonsense. Shio

You are right, he's passed his best, even Eguavoen would have, out of fear done the rightful, at least bringing new blood into to attack to capitalize on the red card, sadly he didn't and pressure mounted on Mikel Obi, forcing him to become highly temperamental as his strikers were so tired.

Due to his form before the nation's cup you know. But looking at him at nation's cup most of his goals came from the penalty spot unlike Drogba who scored excellent goals.
